Rising Together: Crafting Connections Through Baking
Join us for an engaging conversation with renowned bakers Ellen King (FAN ’18), co-owner and director of baking operations at Hewn Bakery, and Jürgen Krauss, a celebrated participant in the 2021 season of The Great British Bake Off who will be visiting from his home in the UK. The dynamic duo first met when Krauss stopped by Hewn’s Evanston location during a previous visit to Chicago, and they bonded quickly over their shared passion for baking.
King opened Hewn in Evanston in 2013 with her partner Julie Matthei, and they have now expanded to locations in Libertyville and Winnetka. Recognized in the New York Times, Saveur, Chicago magazine, Forbes, and InStyle, Hewn has also been featured as the Best Bakery in the Midwest by Midwest Living and as one of the 10 Best Bakeries in the United States by Food & Wine. King is a frequent speaker and educator on the benefits and beauty of heritage wheat and small-scale milling. Her first cookbook, Heritage Baking, was published in 2018.
Krauss was born in Germany and was immersed in a family culture of music, science, and home baking. He began making bread in earnest in 2010, utilizing his passion for systematic precision. He was an audience favorite on The Great British Bake Off, displaying his talent for flavor combinations, architecture, and engineering to create his memorable bakes. Krauss teaches baking online and in person, gives demonstrations at food festivals, and his book, German Baking, was published in 2023.
King and Krauss will describe their nontraditional paths into baking: King was a classically trained chef with a keen interest in historic preservation, and Krauss has a background in music, science, and IT.
They will be in conversation with 14-time Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist Vince Gerasole, host of CBS Chicago’s weekly entertainment segment CBS2’s Got Your Ticket. Gerasole was named the Best Broadcast Reporter in the state by The Associated Press of Illinois, and his culinary reporting was nominated three times for a James Beard Award.
This event is suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded but not live streamed and will be available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.
NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Cookbook sale and signing at the event, and post-event baked treats, too.
