We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation
With a reporter’s eye and an insider’s perspective, journalist Eric Garcia chronicles the state of autism in America in his new book, We’re Not Broken: Changing the Autism Conversation. Part manifesto, part memoir, and part reported essay, We’re Not Broken sees Eric weave together personal anecdotes, interviews, and the latest scientific research to debunk the most pernicious misconceptions about autism and show that autistic people are everywhere — from dating apps to workplaces to Congress — and deserve to have a say in the policies and structures shaping their lives.
Mr. Garcia presents a comprehensive survey of autism in the U.S., incorporating the perspectives of autistic people from all walks of life in addition to sharing his experiences as an autistic journalist working at high-profile news outlets in Washington, D.C. He illustrates how autistic people wrestle with education, workplace, and healthcare systems that weren’t built for them and dispels harmful myths, including the belief that autism is caused by vaccines and the misconception that autistic people don’t date. Most importantly, he puts into writing what so many autistic people have been saying for years: autism is a part of their identity, and they don’t need to be fixed.
Mr. Garcia is a senior Washington correspondent at The Independent. Previously, he was an assistant editor at the Washington Post‘s Outlook section and an associate editor at The Hill and a correspondent for National Journal, MarketWatch and Roll Call.
Mr. Garcia will be in conversation with award-winning science writer Steve Silberman (FAN ’15), author of the 2105 book NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, which won the 2015 Samuel Johnson prize for non-fiction, and has been translated into 23 languages.
